“The seminar would benefit those requiring a greater understanding of the practical issues surrounding the underwriting of property and casualty risks. The Underwriting Seminar's main priority is the development of the techniques and skills of reinsurance underwriting, both in theory and in practice. The seminar covers an introduction to burning cost rating using the chain ladder method with consideration given to IBNR, inflation and portfolio changes. Also covered are exposure rating techniques and the use of the Pareto distribution to rate extreme return period driven events.
The course lasts 2 days and is half taught in a lecture format with worked examples and half as an in-depth team based case study, applying the techniques learnt from the lecture topics. It is anticipated that delegates will have a limited knowledge of the mechanics of reinsurance with varying degrees of experience in the insurance industry. The course is an excellent opportunity for budding underwriters and intermediaries who wish to improve their technical skills and those whose day to day jobs may not include underwriting but require an understanding of underwriting (lawyers, accountants, wording technicians, actuaries and consultants have all attended past courses). In addition to these benefits the course is an invaluable opportunity to meet and interact with other reinsurance professionals from a wide variety of business areas. It allows members the unique opportunity to learn from practicing underwriters who use the skills taught during the course on a day to day basis and places a particular emphasis on combining theory with practice
